    you'd think once was enough

Monday, November 17, 2008, 09:20 AM EST [General]

Approx 6 montsh ago Rob and I laid a concrete patio in the back yard. We did it ourselves, and it turned out ok, but we decided not to ever work with concrete again on our own. Not that it did not turn out nice, it did and it serves it purpose. But Rob did not heed my warnings, and got some cancrete on the inside of his glove. This resulted in what we thought was a bad concrete burn on his hand. A few days after we laid the patio, the chemical burn made itself known. About 25% of one of his palms swelled, blistered, and generally just got really icky and painful. It took about a week and a half to fully heal, and he had some slight scarring from it.

Cut now to a week ago Sunday. While I am at the station training I get a call. Rob has decided to take the old spiral staircase down from the captains watch on our back porch so he can rebuild a new one. I get the call that the whole staircase has collapsed, with him stuck up on the Captain's Walk. I need to come home and rescue him. It was pretty funny. I have some pictures. He hates that I took them, but laughed as well. We felt this would be the most excitement to result from that day. Well...The boy wore the same work gloves he used when he did the concrete work 6 months earlier. I thought he had thrown them out. But no. And what was inside those gloves?? Cement dust. That coupled with hand sweat, and wearing thm for hours at a time showed its results Tuesday morning.

Robs entire hands are now burned, all the way up 2 inches on the wrists. And they are in BAD shape. Blistering, swelling so bad his wedding ring had to be pried off, and he can't even bend his fingers. The pain is so bad we have him taking pain meds, benedryl for the swelling and itching. It was really bad over the weekend, and this morning he cannot even go into work because driving would be impossible.

I feel so bad for him, but common sense should have played a part somewhere in this. He has finally thrown out the gloves. He is very upset at how painful this has become. And his hands itch so badly he scratches them in his sleep, which will ruin the skin. He has already scratched off patches of the top skin layer, and now we are afraid of infection. *sigh*

Today is going to be tough. Hopefully he will be over this soon. He is still trying to work from home, but typing is damn near impossible. And I certainly do not want to take dictation for coding. LOL

Let this be a lesson to all men. The "honey-do" list can be hazardous to your health.

    RIP Richard Wright

Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 08:25 AM EST [General]

A legend is gone.  I am so sad.  Pink Floyd is my most favorite group and it seems we are losing them year by year.

Rest in peace, Rich.  Wish you were here.

LONDON - Richard Wright, a founding member of Pink Floyd, died Monday. He was 65.

The rock group's spokesman, Doug Wright, who's unrelated, said Wright died after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. He said the band member's family did not want to give more details about his death.

Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason in college and joined their early band, Sigma 6. Along with the late Syd Barrett, the four formed Pink Floyd in 1965.

The group's jazz-infused rock and drug-laced multimedia "happenings" made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and their 1967 album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn," was a hit.

In the early days of Pink Floyd, Wright, along with Barrett, was seen as the group's dominant musical force. The London-born musician and son of a biochemist wrote songs and played the keyboard.

"Rick's keyboards were an integral part of the Pink Floyd sound," said Joe Boyd, a prominent record producer who worked with Pink Floyd early in its career.

The band released a series of commercially and critically successful albums including 1973's "The Dark Side of the Moon," which has sold more than 40 million copies. Wright wrote "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us and Them" for that album, and worked on the group's epic compositions such as "Atom Heart Mother," "Echoes" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond."

But tensions grew among Waters, Wright and fellow band member David Gilmour. The tensions came to a head during the making of "The Wall" when Waters insisted Wright be fired. As a result, Wright was relegated to the status of session musician on the tour of "The Wall," and did not perform on Pink Floyd's 1983 album, "The Final Cut."

Wright formed a new band Zee with Dave Harris from the band Fashion, and released one album, "Identity," with Atlantic Records.

Waters left Pink Floyd in 1985 and Wright began recording with Mason and Gilmour again, releasing the albums "The Division Bell" and "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" as Pink Floyd. Wright also released the solo albums "Wet Dream" (1978) and "Broken China" (1996).

In July 2005, Wright, Waters, Mason and Gilmour reunited to perform at the "Live 8" charity concert in London - the first time in 25 years they had been onstage together.

Wright also worked on Gilmour's solo projects, most recently playing on the 2006 album "On an Island" and the accompanying world tour.

Gilmour paid tribute to Wright on Monday, saying his input was often forgotten.

"He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognized Pink Floyd sound," he said. "I have never played with anyone quite like him."

    I'm home!! WOOOHOOO!

Monday, September 15, 2008, 12:53 PM EST [General]

So I just came home from a week long cruise through the carribean.  It was such a good time.  I really cannot wait for my next cruise, which will be very soon!

The weather was not horrid, but it did mess up our ports of call a few times.  We had to go to Montego Bay instead of Ochos Rios in Jamaica.  It was not bad, we got a few things of shopping done, had some jerk chicken, bought some really nice rum!  We had a guide named Roy, and he rocked.  He took us everywhere we needed to go.

Labadee, Haiti was GORGEOUS and the weather as wonderful for it.  Although we did see the biggest roach we have ever seen while we were sunning ourselves.  It tried to attack us, and we were very worried and scared.  lol

Grand Cayman was missed completely.  So we spent most of the day on the top deck in the sun relaxing and enjoying it.

Cozumel was fun, with lots of shopping and great bars!  We hooked up with this group of people we met on the boat, and drank til we were stupid.  lol  Got a henna tattoo that has bled and now looks like a fuzzy heart.

I brought back a ton of booze...wow its cheap outside of the country.  i got a little color, but did not burn badly.  i got a bunch of gifts for my kids and Rob, which they were just so happy to get.

Oh, and like I said, I met this great group of people!  Mark and Susan from Ireland, Paul and Lisa from the UK, and CJ and Melissa from South Carolina.  They were fabulous to hang out with, and serious drinkers.  lol  You know, my kind of people.  LOL

There was some drama with the people I travelled with, but rather than try to get involved, i removed myself from the situation.  I guess this caused more drama.  Don't know, don't care.  I am too grown up to do the whole drama thing.  LOL  And it certainly did not wreck any part of my cruise.

Rob and I will be planning another cruise for te very near future.  I really had so much fun, and cannot wait to do it again.  I just wish my head was not so swimmy and feeling like I am still on the boat.

Ugh, and now back to reality.  So much work to do.  So little time.  But I know the next vaca is just around the corner, so its all good.

    Cheers!
